Biological Safety Officer (at the rank of Assistant Registrar) in the Safety Office (Ref.: 201701040) 

Applications are invited for appointment as Biological Safety Officer (at the rank of Assistant Registrar) in the Safety Office, to commence on March 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, initially on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. 

Applicants should possess (i) a higher degree in a subject related to life sciences; (ii) ideally 8 years’ experience in laboratories or industrial production; (iii) sound knowledge and expertise of microbiology and/or biotechnology application; and (iv) extensive experience working in a microbiological containment laboratory or related bioscience environment. 

Applicants should be able to think strategically, identify underlying issues and engage people at different levels including professional colleagues, scientists and senior administrators within the University. They should have strong communication skills and sound analytical skills to identify underlying gaps and deficiencies related to laboratory and biological safety.  They should also have initiative and decisiveness, good organizational and planning skills in delivering expected outcomes on time and to the required standard, and the ability to work collaboratively, maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues and all stakeholders.  They should be able to write effectively, including technical reports, and to present complex technical information in a clear and concise way for both scientific and non-technical audiences. 

The appointee will report directly to the Director of Safety and is expected to provide expert advices and services to the University community on biological safety matters.  He/She will provide services ranging from policy formulation, laboratory inspections, provision of specialist advices, risk assessments, accident investigations, to safety training for all levels of university staff. As the University’s resource person for biosafety, he/she will contribute to the University’s commitment to a safe place of work for all staff, students and visitors.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifications and experience will be offered, as well as annual leave and medical benefits.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
