This full-time ERC funded post is available from a starting date of between 1st November 2017 and 1st July 2018 on a 36 month fixed term basis.

The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow or Research Fellow to support the work of Dr. Thomas Curie (Senior Lecturer in Cultural Evolution). The successful applicant will work as part of a broader project that will examine the cultural evolution and ecology of institutions, taking an integrated evolutionary approach to investigate the interrelated rules that regulate human social organization and cooperation.

The post will involve constructing new datasets on cross-cultural institutional diversity and historical changes in social organization and institutions. Data will come from collating existing datasets and assembling new data (e.g. from sociological, political science, economic, anthropological, historical, or archaeological sources) at global and regional scales. The post-holder will analyse these data using statistical techniques in order to test hypotheses about the evolution of institutions.

The successful applicant will:

  • Be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, and communicate complex information, orally, and in writing.
  • Be expected to communicate the findings of the project by writing papers for publication in academic journals.
  • Have experience of systematically assembling large datasets concerning some aspect of human culture or social organization, and experience in scientifically testing hypotheses using statistical techniques.
  • Have experience with the statistical programming language R (or competence with other similar languages) and familiarity with evolutionary theory particularly as applied to human culture and behaviour are desirable.

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
