Salary: £26,052 to £38,183 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £29301 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work at the forefront of research and science on the Horizon 2020 OPTIMISED project. The research is focussed on progressing manufacturing informatics as a multidisciplinary research theme at the interface between engineering, computer science and operational research. You will work closely with other researchers from the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Computer Science as well as with 9 industrial and research project partners from various institutions across Europe.

The OPTIMISED research project investigates how informatics can be integrated with traditional manufacturing techniques to develop future smart manufacturing systems by bringing together methods of data analytics, mathematical modelling, operational research and experimental validation. You will have direct contact with industry partners and you will participate in developing and implementing multi-objective optimisation models to improve operating efficiency, reduce cost and increase revenue across different industries. These methods will be integrated, tested and validated at industry partners’ sites.

The role holder will be educated to PhD level (or about to obtain) or equivalent in computer science, operations management, operational research or industrial engineering, or a related engineering and management discipline specialised in optimisation. Strong analytical abilities and problem solving skills. Strong knowledge of operational research and experience in formulating and implementing multi-objective optimisation models: knowledge of multi-objective optimisation techniques in operational research and artificial intelligence (linear programming, genetic algorithms, heuristic search techniques, constraint programming etc.) Proven track-record for being able to apply optimisation techniques in one or more domains such as manufacturing, allocation and scheduling problems. Proficiency in C++ and/or Java programming language are required. Experience with SQL and relational databases is highly desired. Excellent interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and through written reports; and active listening skills. Effective time management and ability to work both in a team and independently are essential.

This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 October 2018.
