Applications are invited for the above post to work with Drs Simon Preston, Karthik Bharath, and Yves van Gennip, and Prof. Michaela Mahlberg (Birmingham) on a Bloomberg-funded project entitled “Dynamic Word Embeddings". This project will deliver novel tools for the statistical analysis of vast text corpora. The main goal is to harness the power of recently introduced "word embeddings" to develop and apply new dynamic versions for studying how word meanings change over time, based on Bloomberg news data and other news archives. 

Candidates must hold or be near completion of a PhD, or equivalent, in a relevant branch of mathematics, physics, or statistics. A strong knowledge of advanced linear algebra and excellent computer programming skills are essential. In addition, a background in more than one of the following areas is highly desirable: numerical optimisation; text mining; natural language processing; dimension reduction; statistical analysis of large data sets. Candidates should be confident, organised, have good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team as well as independently. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to writing scientific papers, and to disseminating the research at relevant workshops and conferences. They should have evidence that the quality and quantity of their previous research outputs is commensurate with their level of experience.

This full-time position is available from 1 September 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter, and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 12 months.
