Detail information about job Research Associate in Mitigation Technologies. Terms and conditions vacancy

South Kensington Campus

Fixed Term: up to 24 months full-time

The Grantham Institute is seeking to recruit a full time Research Associate for 24 months, with a possibility of extension where new funding opportunities would support this.

The post holder will focus on the analysis of the technological, economic and policy implications of low-carbon pathways at both national and global scales. They will be responsible for developing, applying and interpreting outputs of a state-of-the-art energy systems model to explore energy techno-economic pathways to climate change mitigation. Further work will include: the analysis of low-carbon technology innovation; the evaluation of the performance and cost reduction potential of emerging low-carbon technologies; the assessment of low-carbon policies and their effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions; and research into the drivers and barriers of implementing low-carbon technologies and measures.

You will have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in science, engineering or economics, or have an equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience. Knowledge of the nature of climate change, its causes and possible solutions is essential, together with an understanding of the structure and nature of energy systems, from resource extraction, through conversion and distribution, to final usage of energy. You must possess an understanding of the range of energy technologies available, including low-carbon technologies (i.e. what they are, in which economic sectors they are used, their basic technical characteristics, and the challenges to deploying new technologies). An understanding of the principles of numerical modelling applied within a scientific, engineering or economic context is essential, along with knowledge of the range of climate change mitigation policy instruments; how they are structured, and their advantages and disadvantages. You must also demonstrate a creative approach to problem-solving and an ability to communicate complex information clearly. Experience of energy systems modelling, ideally using the TIMES platform, or of numerical modelling in other contexts with an equivalent level of complexity, is highly desirable.
