The Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a major new initiative by the University of Exeter (ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world), designed to promote interdisciplinary research that transcends the boundaries of mathematics, engineering and the biological, medical and physical sciences. Its mission is to analyse living cells and organisms as integrated systems, with the aim of unravelling how diseases disrupt biological processes at the molecular, cellular and organismal level.
Our vision is to build a team of researchers who will work together across disciplines to identify new ways to diagnose, treat and cure disease in plants and animals, especially humans. Our goal is to identify common signatures of disease, irrespective of host or the precise mechanism of disease pathogenesis.
We are recruiting a new part time (80%), fixed term (for 2 years) Research Technician to support the work of Dr. Vicki Gold (http://biosciences.exeter.ac.uk/staff/index.php?web_id=Vicki_Gold) and Dr. Bertram Daum (http://emps.exeter.ac.uk/staff/bd309/).
Our research concerns the central role that membrane-embedded protein transport and assembly machines play across all three domains of life. The position is available immediately for a fixed term of two years, and will be extended subject to funding. The successful applicant will be a talented and highly motivated technical assistant, responsible for the successful day-to-day running of our wet laboratories.
The post will include:
- Supporting the operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Support in preparation of solutions, media, ordering and cataloguing of consumables.
- Maintenance of yeast, bacterial and archaeal cell culture. Assistance with protein purification.
- Support of research projects, including molecular cloning and basic biochemical techniques to assist with sample preparation for Gold and Daum lab electron microscopy projects.
Candidates will be expected to be motivated and demonstrate knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry, possess excellent problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills and a collaborative spirit. Experience in cultivation of extremophiles and genetic manipulation of archaea will be a plus. The successful applicant will contribute to the team and be able to supervise and train less experienced group members. The candidate will be able to convey oral, written, electronic and visual media information in a clear and accurate manner and complete tasks to a given plan by prioritising and organising their own work to achieve agreed objectives.
