Detail information about job Electron Microscopy Experimental Officer. Terms and conditions vacancy

The Living Systems Institute (LSI) is a major new initiative by the University of Exeter (ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world), designed to promote interdisciplinary research that transcends the boundaries of mathematics, engineering and the biological, medical and physical sciences. Its mission is to analyse living cells and organisms as integrated systems, with the aim of unravelling how diseases disrupt biological processes at the molecular, cellular and organismal level. Our vision is to build a team of researchers who will work together across disciplines to identify new ways to diagnose, treat and cure disease in plants and animals, especially humans. Our goal is to identify common signatures of disease, irrespective of host or the precise mechanism of disease pathogenesis.

We are recruiting a new full-time (fixed term for 2 years) experimental officer to support the work of Dr. Vicki Gold (http://biosciences.exeter.ac.uk/staff/index.php?web_id=Vicki_Gold) and Dr. Bertram Daum (http://emps.exeter.ac.uk/staff/bd309/).

Our research concerns the central role that membrane-embedded protein transport and assembly machines play across all three domains of life. The position is available immediately for a fixed term of two years, and will be extended subject to funding.

The successful applicant will be a talented and highly motivated electron microscopy specialist, responsible for the successful running of our new electron cryo-microscopy facility and will support data collection and processing for exciting research projects from both labs. The facility will consist of a 120kV automation and cryo-capable Tecnai Sprit EM equipped with a fast-readout camera, ancillary sample preparation equipment and a high-powered computer cluster.

The post will include:

  • Supporting the operation and routine maintenance of the microscope as well as ancillary equipment.
  • Support in basic laboratory maintenance such as preparing solutions, ordering and cataloguing of consumables.
  • Contribution to research projects, to include sample preparation, data collection and image processing for Gold and Daum lab projects (negative stain and cryo)

Candidates will be expected to be motivated and demonstrate detailed knowledge of electron microscopy, possess excellent problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills and a collaborative spirit. The successful applicant will contribute to the team and be able to supervise and train less experienced group members. The candidate will be able to convey oral, written, electronic and visual media information in a clear and accurate manner and complete tasks to a given plan by prioritising and organising their own work to achieve agreed objectives.

The University of Exeter offers a wide range of benefits which can be found here http://www.exeter.ac.uk/staff/benefits/benefits/, and include generous holiday entitlement, pension, on-site gym, outdoor swimming pool and continuous investment in your personal and professional development (see http://www.exeter.ac.uk/departments/technicalservices/). Our campus is located in Exeter city centre, in the heart of glorious Devon.

For further information please contact Dr. Vicki Gold or Dr. Bertram Daum, e-mail [email protected] and [email protected] or telephone (01392) 727454.
