The Economic and Social Research Institute, founded in 1960, is located in Dublin’s South Docklands area. Its mission is to produce high quality research, relevant to Ireland’s economic and social development, with the aim of contributing to knowledge and informing policymaking and public debate. It has over 100 staff including economists, sociologists and other social scientists, in addition to support and technical staff.

We wish to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow for research in the area of Business Economics. ESRI research in this area ranges across a variety of topics related to firm productivity, access to finance, taxation and the impact of Brexit on exporters. To work in this area strong quantitative skills are essential and previous experience with analysis of large survey or administrative datasets would be an asset.

Economic Research

The Economic Analysis Division of the Economic and Social Research Institute in Dublin undertakes research in a wide range of economic areas, including: Macroeconomics; Internationalisation and Competitiveness; Energy and Environment; Communications and Transport; Labour Markets and Skills.

Over many years, the ESRI has sought to develop an understanding of how the Irish economy behaves and how policy can be expected to affect its future development. The Institute’s approach to developing this understanding has drawn on both macroeconomic and microeconomic techniques and perspectives.

Role Description

The ESRI is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Business Economics who will contribute in the following key research areas; furthering the work relating to the different aspects of the impact of Brexit on the Irish economy, analysing the impact of policy interventions on firms and examining firm’s investment patterns and how firms finance those investments.  In general, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to relevant high-quality research papers which can be published in both international peer-reviewed journals and domestically-oriented policy papers. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in using micro-econometric techniques in addressing research questions in these areas.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD or relevant post-graduate qualification in economics or finance;
  • Excellent quantitative skills including proven ability to use up-to-date statistical and econometric techniques;
  • Research interest and knowledge in firm performance;
  • Previous experience with micro-econometric analysis;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Proven ability to deliver outputs to tight deadlines;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and capacity to contribute to other areas of ESRI research.

Terms & Application Procedure

Appointments will be on a three-year fixed-term contract basis and salary will be in the range €39,554 - €43,838, commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be based in the ESRI offices in Dublin 2.
