Our Leverhulme Programme Grant brings together plant scientists, biochemists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians, and architects to develop new natural materials capable of providing a renewable and energy-efficient alternative to traditional manufactured materials.

Applications are invited for Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in plant cell wall biochemistry. The post holder will be in the lab of Professor Paul Dupree. The project aims are to understand the molecular architecture of the plant cell wall, and to apply these findings to the improvement of natural material use. The post holder will work as part of a team of biochemists to understand the biosynthesis and structure of xylan in wood, bamboo and also in Arabidopsis as a model species. Our recent work has contributed to a significant advance in understanding of cell wall structure (Nature communications 7:13902). Previous experience in one or more of carbohydrate/polysaccharide analysis, solid state NMR of biological materials or plant cell wall biology is essential.

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives and research grant proposals. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage their own research, with guidance as required, and to be able to write research publications. The holder must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts.
