You are invited to work on a research programme as part of a collaboration between Touchlight Genetics Ltd and Newcastle University. The work is funded by Innovate UK and aims to develop compound semiconductor nanowire devices towards commercial application in sensing and labelling technologies. The work builds on previous studies of DNA-templated nanowires by the Chemical Nanoscience Laboratory at Newcastle University and the technology developed by Touchlight for synthesis of large quantities of monodisperse DNA molecules called dbDNA™. The research will involve preparation of II-VI nanowires using aqueous chemistry, formulation of inks and printing of nanowire sensing and labelling devices. A range of probe microscopies, spectroscopic and electrical techniques will be employed to characterise the devices and assess their analytical performance.

You should have been awarded or expect to have a PhD in chemistry, although experimental physics or material sciences may be considered. if your PhD is not yet awarded, it should be submitted by the time of appointment. You should have a keen interest in nanomaterials characterization and their application in sensing technology. Expertise in materials printing is desirable, but not essential. You should have excellent written and communication skills, be highly self-motivated, and capable of working independently and as part of a larger group. You should also be prepared to write regular progress reports and liaise between Newcastle University and Touchlight Genetics Ltd.
