Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties
Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 25 - 28 £28,098 - £30,688).
Duration of employment: This position is full-time and available to 31st August 2021.
The ProjectDiabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a common complication of diabetes, and DKD is now the most common form of chronic kidney disease. There is no effective way to prevent or treat DKD, leaving many patients in extremely poor health and facing high mortality rates. The BEAt-DKD project (Biomarker enterprise to attack DKD) is a 30 million EURO project funded by the EU Innovative Medicines Initiative and aims to deliver tools and knowledge that will facilitate the development of new, personalised treatments for DKD. Among other things, the project will identify and validate biological markers (biomarkers) to help researchers track whether a patient’s condition has worsened, and whether a treatment is working for them. They will also work to identify different sub-groups of patients that could respond differently to certain treatments. The results will therefore pave the way for the development of effective personalised treatments for DKD.
Role Purpose
Genetic epidemiologist in Diabetic Kidney Disease.
The post requires a postdoctoral qualified researcher with experience in statistics, epidemiology, genetics, and health informatics. The project aims to find molecular and genetic biomarkers that predict the development of diabetic kidney disease in order to inform prevention and early treatment. Biomarkers that predict responses to individual drugs will also be evaluated, providing the basis of precision medicine in the treatment of kidney disease. The project will use large genomic datasets from the GoDARTS cohort and link this to electronic health records including longitudinal renal function tests and the prescription encashment.
Potential applicants are encouraged to have an informal discussion about the post with Professor Colin Palmer [email protected].
