Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties
Duration of employment: This position is full-time and available to 31st March 2021.
BackgroundThe University of Dundee currently manages and hosts clinical data for national and regional Bioresources such as BioBankUK (Scotland), Tayside Bioresource, GoDARTS, Generation Scotland SFHS. These Bioresources currently comprise 15% of the Tayside population as well as including pan-Scottish resources. This currently includes clinical data for consented DNA samples for nearly 100,000 individuals and large-scale genotyping and sequencing projects are ongoing. The aim of the group is to deliver systematic genomic data QC, curation and user access, across these projects, linking into a College of Life Sciences/College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing initiative to develop robust infrastructure for linking genomic, imaging and health data to facilitate research and clinical care in these areas.
Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 25 - 28 £28,098 - £30,688).
Role PurposeThe University of Dundee has been awarded a £7million grant from the National Institute of Health Research Global Health programme to establish a major new Scotland-India clinical partnership to combat diabetes. The new project will see Dundee’s world leading expertise in the use of genomics linked to medical records to deliver improved care in diabetes `twinned’ with the large patient data set (covering over 400,000 Indian diabetic patients) collected by Dr Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, the largest clinical network of diabetes care in India.
Professor Colin Palmer will lead the research unit in Dundee and this is a fantastic opportunity to work with a team on the development of a leading edge system which will be invaluable to researchers in the Bio-medical field at an international level.
Under the supervision of the Unit Manager, Scientists, Clinicians and the Software Architect you will be involved in incorporating Genomic Data into a larger system which links clinical data and image data for research. You will develop, test, and implement the system and work with other researchers to analyse the data and publish relevant findings.
