Applications are invited for a one-year Postdoctoral Research Assistant position on a project analysing the large-scale analysis of melodic patterns in jazz performance. The main responsibility of the role is the integration of data from various project partners (involving ontology design, named entity resolution and audio identification), to create structured data, from which relationships about music and musicians can be derived, queried and tested.

This post is part of the Trans-Atlantic Program Digging into Data Challenge project “Dig that Lick: Analysing large-scale data for melodic patterns in jazz performances”, based at the Centre for Digital Music (C4DM) at Queen Mary University of London. C4DM is a world-leading multidisciplinary research group in the field of Digital Music & Audio Technology, and is part of the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). The ideal candidate will have a PhD or equivalent degree in one of the following: Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or Music (technology, performance or musicology); Experience with research in music informatics or a related area and programming ability in one or more of: C/C++, Python, MATLAB.

Musical proficiency at an intermediate level or higher, either through formal training or equivalent performing experience, and experience working on interdisciplinary projects combining the arts with engineering or computer science is desirable as is knowledge of statistical analysis methods and/or experience with relevant statistical software and familiarity with the semantic web and ontologies used for representing music information.

This could be a full - or part-time post (the total amount of funding allows for 12 months of full-time work or 24 months at 50% FTE), until 31 September 2018 full time or 31 September 2019 50% FTE. The starting salary will be in the range of £32,405 - £36,064 per annum inclusive of London allowance (pro rata for part-time). Benefits include 30 days annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
