Detail information about job Research Assistant/Associate in Low Cost Portable Nano-Particulate Emission Measurements System(PEMs4Nano) for Vehicles. Terms and conditions vacancy

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant/ Associate position in the Department of Engineering, funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 initiative on Green Vehicles.  The post holder will work on a novel, low-cost method of measuring nano-particulate emissions from on-road vehicles (http://www.pems4nano.eu/partners/) within the research group of Adam Boies (www.anam.eng.cam.ac.uk/).

Small particulate matter from vehicles are invisible to the eye and have been implicated in diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's. Vehicle manufactures must comply with stringent rules on the emission gases such as CO2 and NOx, however, current on-road methods are not able to detect these very small (<23 nm) and hazardous nano-particulates also emitted from vehicles, and hence these are not regulated.  The methods that are used by car manufacturers to reduce the emission of gasses such as CO2 and NOx may in fact be exacerbation the situation by producing even smaller particulates and therefore it is important to be able to measure these accurately and in real time.

The PEMs4Nano project seeks to develop measurement procedures that are robust and reliable for the measurement of particles down to 10 nm and under real driving conditions.  The system that we are working towards will be used for regulatory purposes and as such must be capable of robust and repeatable measurements of solid particles down to 10 nm. Additional work will seek to measure the concentration of semi-volatile species that are of growing interest from regulatory and health bodies.

The candidate will liaise with other members of the PEMs4Nano project to share results and findings. The researcher will perform experiments at the University of Cambridge as well as participate in international testing at partner institutions in Europe. Applicants should have obtained (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a 2.1 degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in an Engineering or a related subject for the Research Assistant grade or a PhD if applying at Research Associate grade.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,298 - £30,175; Research Associate £30,175 - £38,183

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
