Detail information about job Research Fellow in Experimental X-Ray Tomographic Imaging. Terms and conditions vacancy

We are seeking a Research Fellow for 18 month to work on an exciting three year project to help in the development of novel approaches to three dimensional tomographic x-ray imaging.

X-ray tomography is used in many areas, from medical diagnosis to the non-destructive testing of aerospace components. Modern aerospace components are often safety critical and thus need regular safety testing. However, they often have complex shapes and use a range of materials, which means that traditional x-ray systems do not work well. We have been developing more advanced systems to specifically address these issues. One of our developmental systems is now capable of moving objects along complex trajectories, however, due to missing tomographic information in the acquisition, current methodsstill lead to results with significant artefacts.

Your role will be the development of bespoke and versatile test objects and the x-ray scanning of these object. Scanning will be done using traditional methods as well as our new system. The test objects will be constructed out of different parts that can be combined in different ways. Each part is to be manufactured several times out of different materials. Scanning will be done in one of our state of the art x-ray tomography scanners.

You will join a vibrant team of several PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who are working on a range of related projects.Team members come from the signal processing and control group and the µ-VIS volumetric imaging centre. The group has access to the µ-VIS imaging centre (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/muvis/index.page), which hosts seven complementary XCT systems, offering imaging capabilities from nanoCT imaging to the largest highest energy micro-CT system in Europe at present. A large walk in room based system allows us the flexibility to install different platforms and manipulator systems. The Faculty’s Engineering Design and Manufacturing centre provides a wide range of manufacturing capabilities, from precision machining to 3D printing. You will work closely with a second postdoctoral research who’s task will be the development of novel data analysis tools to reconstruct the 3D images form the data you provide.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

A PhD* or equivalent professional qualification and experience in material science, engineering, applied physics or an equivalent technical discipline is required.

Other desirable experience includes a background in x-ray imaging, CAD design and material science.

A detailed list of desirable and essential criteria can be found in the Person Specification document.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

Informal enquiries are particularly welcome - please contact Dr Thomas Blumensath via email [email protected].

Please include a CV, publication list, and statement of research interests with your application.

Application procedure

You should submit your completed online application form by clicking the 'apply' button below. The application deadline will be midnight on the closing date stated above.
