Detail information about job Senior Lecturer/Reader. Terms and conditions vacancy
Applications are invited for a Senior Lecturer/Reader in Mathematics, Modelling and Simulation, based in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey, and co-funded by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The University of Surrey and NPL are funding this joint appointment to extend research capabilities relating to Bayesian inference, machine learning, and large scale computation. The research is likely to include the use of adjoint methods or similar for sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification associated with inference and decision making. The researcher will be working on developing new theory, algorithms and computational capability, and journal publications.
We are looking for an outstanding mathematician or physicist with significant experience in data assimilation or mathematical modelling, to strengthen and expand this research area. The post will be based in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey, but the post holder will work closely with the Data Science activity at NPL http://www.npl.co.uk/science-technology/mathematics-modelling-and-simulation/research/data-analysis-and-uncertainty-evaluation/
The successful candidate will join a friendly, vibrant and highly-rated department with a broad range of research interests, many of which span the interface between pure and applied mathematics. These include theoretical aspects of mathematics, the development of methods for solving physical problems, modelling of physical and biological systems, and a variety of interdisciplinary collaborations. In the last UK Research Assessment Exercise, three-quarters of the Department’s applied mathematics submission was rated world leading or internationally excellent. Further information about the Department can be found at www.maths.surrey.ac.uk.
The NPL Data Science Group has extensive collaborations with universities and industry, within the UK and internationally. The candidate will be encouraged to develop interactions through research collaborations, supervise PhD students and participation in national and international research conferences. The candidate will also have the opportunity to work with scientists at NPL developing world-leading measurement capability and create impact from science through NPL’s extensive partnerships in all sectors in the UK.
Informal academic enquiries are welcome and may be made to Prof Ian Roulstone (Head of Department): [email protected] or +44 (0)1483 689638.
The post is available from 1st January 2018.
