Detail information about job Research Fellow in Parallel Simulation and Visualisation. Terms and conditions vacancy

Full Time, Fixed Term until 31 December 2019

Location: Cranfield, Bedfordshire, MK43 0AL

Cranfield University is an exclusively postgraduate university specialising in technology and management research whilst demonstrating global leadership in the quality of its education provision (both to students and to executive-level professionals). Cranfield is number one in the UK for training and producing engineering and technology postgraduates, ranked number one for defence education and fourth for mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering education in the UK. In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 exercise, 81% of our research was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. Cranfield has also been awarded the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize in Further and Higher Education four times, for our Fellowship in Manufacturing Management (2005), work in Humanitarian De-Mining (2007), Aviation Safety through research and training in air accident investigation (2011) and for our research on water and sanitation for developing countries (2015). Critical intellectual mass at Cranfield has recently been organised around eight major themes. The themes reflect the core strengths and they pull together the breadth of the talent and experience across the University enabling researchers to apply a multi-disciplinary approach that enables cross-boundary collaboration, benefiting researchers, students and clients.

This is a full time, fixed-term position to support the delivery of research on Parallel Simulation and Visualisation for the Innovate UK-funded project HumanDrive. The main aim of the project is to provide a demonstration of a driverless car with the capability of emulating human driver behaviour. As a part of the demonstrator development, there is a need to provide quantifiable comparison between the desired and actual behaviours together with traceability of the differences. Simulations based on Cranfield University’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility will be used to provide synthetic data for comparison of Human Factors and Artificial Intelligence models. Both the synthetic data and the data from physical trials will be visualised and compared. Hence, this post requires a combination of skills in parallel programming and visualisation.

The post will involve collaboration with academic and industrial partners. You will need to be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with staff from all organisations across a wide range of disciplines to discuss research methodologies. The ability to communicate, rapidly assess information, resolve problems and respond in a timely manner is essential. A PhD (or close to completion) in Computational Engineering or related engineering/science subject is essential. Industrial experience would be an advantage.

For an informal discussion, please contact Professor Antonios Tsourdos, Head of the Autonomous and Cyber-Physical Systems Centre, on +44 (0)1234 758578 or E: [email protected]
