About the role

A Post-doctoral Research Associate is sought to work on the European Horizon 2020 SSUCHY Project. The SSUCHY (Sustainable Structural and Multifunctional Biocomposites from Hybrid Natural Fibres and bio-based polymers) Project aims to contribute to the development of bio-based composite products with advanced functionalities and high structural properties for transportation sectors and in high value market niches. It aims at exploiting the intrinsic and differentiating properties of plant fibres and bio-based polymers to develop and enhance the functionalities of bio-based composites and thus to diversify their applicative sectors. It will offer opportunities to expand market applications for bio-based composites to semi-structural applications in transportation area (automotive and aerospace) and create new opportunities in high value market niches such as acoustic & electronic sectors. Enhanced functionalities are, in addition to load-bearing resistance and weight reduction of structures, enhanced durability, vibration damping, vibro-acoustic control and fire retardancy. Such developments would provide to the composite industry a significant value and functions added products with high socio-economic impacts and minimized environmental impact.

The successful applicant will be based at Lonsdale House (University of Derby) and will present at various international conferences during the course of the project and meeting with the other European research partners. This opportunity to gain further experience in practical composites manufacturing, computational modelling and material testing, will allow the researcher to develop transferable skills making them well equipped to find employment in either academia, or in the composites manufacturing sector after the project.

The successful applicant will ideally have specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of CAD, numerical analysis (e.g. Finite Element Analysis), programming languages and composites materials testing.

This position has funding for up to 3 years and is available from 1 September 2017 (subject to finalisation of contract).
