Detail information about job PhD Studentship in Computer Vision for X-Ray Image Analysis. Terms and conditions vacancy

Location: Jubilee Campus

Applications are invited for a fully-funded (at UK/EU levels) PhD studentship to be held within the Computer Vision Laboratory in the School of Computer Science at the University of Nottingham. This studentship is associated with a BBSRC Fellowship awarded to Dr Stefan Mairhofer and centres on the development of image analysis methods applicable to plant and soil science.

The aim of the project is to develop analysis techniques applicable to time-ordered sequences X-ray micro computed tomography (µCT) images of soil, in order to advance our understanding of the effect that soil structure has on plant root development. X-ray µCT is a non-invasive imaging technology that allows the acquisition of high-resolution and three-dimensional data, which makes it an excellent tool for time-series analysis.

The successful candidate will develop computational methods to quantify soil characteristics and to capture local variations linked to root growth dynamics. This requires the detection of distinctive image features that can be matched across images acquired at different time points.

The successful applicant will have a good degree (2:1 or above) in Computer Science or a related discipline. Strong computer programming skills are essential, as are good communication skills in both written and spoken English and a willingness to work in a rich, multidisciplinary research environment.

Informal enquires should be made to: Dr Stefan Mairhofer ([email protected])

Prof Tony Pridmore, School of Computer Science, [email protected]
