The Research Team at Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) is responsible for delivering on the charity’s principal remit: to fund world-class research with the aim of ultimately defeating dementia. ARUK fund dementia research through a growing portfolio of grant schemes and strategic initiatives and are looking for an experienced and confident candidate to cover the maternity leave for ARUK’s Head of Research. In this role, you will use scientific knowledge and insight as well as attention to detail to support the Director of Research in the pre- and post-award processes of grant funding and in supporting strategic areas of research. This includes, for example, leadership and implementation of grant funding activities and programmes including management of the Research Team operations plus, support for ARUK’s current research strategy. Further to this, ARUK needs to understand the wider context and impact of its research strategy in relation to the global dementia research landscape. In this role, you will play an important part in developing this understanding, interacting with experts across the external scientific arena. You will have the opportunity to work with all departments across the charity, as well as scientists on our advisory panels and as external peer reviewers and you will represent ARUK internally and externally.
Main tasks of role:
- Oversee operational running of the Research Team
- Oversee operation of ARUKs grant and strategic funding activities, with support from the Director of Research
- Contribute to the development of new strategic projects/initiatives to position ARUK as leaders/facilitators in dementia research
- Analyse and interpret external and internal scientific data to inform new approaches
- Represent ARUK at internal and external events and meetings and on a number of co-funding partnerships
We are looking for:
- Experience of working within a research environment
- Leadership and management experience
- Scientific knowledge of dementia or neuroscience research
- Knowledge of grant funding or other funding initiatives
- An analytical, organised and evidence-based approach
- Excellent personal communication skills, with the ability to communicate with people at all levels face to face and on the phone
- Ability to write professionally, with an ability to adapt communications for different audiences
This is a fixed term position for twelve months, or the return of the post holder, whichever is earlier.
