About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

STFC’s RAL Space department carries out an exciting range of world-class space research and technology development. We’ve had significant involvement in over 200 space missions and operate  at the forefront of UK Space Research.

About The Role

The Earth Observation and Atmospheric Sciences Division within RAL Space are seeking to recruit two scientists to help in the development of the instrumentation and the data processing of remote sensing systems used in Earth Observation.

You will work within the Radiometry Group which has interests in all aspects of the collection and processing of satellite and field instrument data particularly in the visible to infrared wavelength range, including instrumentation and instrument calibration, the derivation of radiance and higher level geophysical products, and data validation.  You should be able to analyse instrument data, write software and experimental procedures, participate in the design of calibration systems for optical instrumentation, generate documentation, manage work flows and interact with academic and industrial partners.  While the group has important core activities, we would encourage the development of individual projects and research interests related to radiometry.

You are expected to support a range of activities including:

  • Design and implementation of optical systems for remote sensing applications
  • Analysis of satellite and field instrument data for earth observation applications
  • Conduct instrument test and calibration campaigns; analysis of measurement data and presentation of test results
  • Design and testing of processing algorithms of optical datasets.

About You

It is essential that you have a first degree and doctorate or equivalent experience in physics or a related subject.

You will have a good understanding of optical systems and related fields (e.g. spectroscopy, radiative transfer, thermometry, calibration).

Computer programming ability, particularly for the development of algorithms in a high-level language and their application to instrument data, is essential for this role.

You must have good spoken and written communication skills, particularly the ability to present clearly the analysis of complex problems.

In addition to the above, for the Experimental Scientist position you must have experience with developing optical instrumentation for remote sensing application, including data collection and analysis.

For the Data Scientist position you must also have experience with processing data sets associated with remote sensing systems, including mathematical and statistical analysis.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.

Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages (http://www.stfccareers.co.uk).
