About the role:

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Business Improvement and Operations Manager based in the Business Improvement Group within ESRC. 

You will play a key role in coordinating the implementation and oversight of the ESRC Organisational Plan 2017-20. You will lead and contribute to a spectrum of business improvement projects to make the ESRC and the Research Councils more efficient, effective and resilient.

You will play a key role in managing ESRC’s corporate relationship and collaboration with key stakeholders, such as the RCUK Research Funding Team and the RCUK Funding Assurance Unit and will represent ESRC on the cross council Grants Business As Usual Operations Group.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Engaging in the development of new initiatives to provide guidance on ensuring a consistent and streamlined approach to implementation of processes and policies, which meet the business need
  • Drafting and responding to a range of written documents containing reports, project related documentation, proposals, reviews, and audits recommendations
  • Gathering, analysing and synthesising complex information and/or business requirements from a variety of sources
  • Facilitating meetings, workshops and group discussions effectively, with the ability to challenge perceptions, ideas and assumptions constructively
  • Leading and contributing to Business Improvement projects, evidence based reviews, audits and corporate initiatives.

About you:

You will have a demonstrable enthusiasm for the importance of social science and its development.

You must have experience of working with waterfall (PRINCE2), agile and/or Lean project and process improvement approaches.

It is essential that you have an understanding of what constitutes continuous/business improvement and how it can be applied as well as an understanding of how higher education and research funding works.

You must have sophisticated analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

General PC skills, including a good working knowledge of MS Office packages (i.e. Word, Excel, and Power Point), email and use of the internet as a search tool are a prerequisite of the post.

You will have the ability to work independently, to multi-task, prioritise workloads and operate effectively within a team and project environment and also have excellent oral, presentation and written communication skills, including drafting written documents containing arguments, proposals and recommendations.

It is desirable but not essential that you have significant experience in research management, research commissioning or related management or administration.
