A fully funded 3-year PhD studentship is available within the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, UK in the area of Sentiment Analysis.

The studentship is funded by Meltwater, a global Media Intelligence Company. The studentship will cover tuition fees and provides a stipend towards living expenses (£14,600 p.a.) and some funding for resources (e.g., hardware, software), international conference participation, and travel.

The PhD candidate will be expected to develop a PhD project closely related to one or more of the following topics:

• Aspect-based sentiment classification and summarisation,
• Subjectivity detection and classification,
• Speculation and negation scope detection,
• Opinion-based entity ranking.

The successful applicant will be co-supervised by Dr. Mark Lee (University of Birmingham) and Dr. Giorgio Orsi (Meltwater) and will have access to the Meltwater offices and Shack 15 Data Science Hub facilities in London. PhD candidate specification:Required:

• A first class degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence.
• A strong programming and statistical / Mathematical background with experience with programming languages such as Python or Java.
• Experience in Computational Linguistics / Natural Language Processing, including statistical Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
• Good communication skills, ability to work in teams but, most importantly, enthusiasm.

Desirable:

• Experience with data science tooling such as Python / Zeppelin notebooks.
• Some experience with numerical processing in R, Matlab, or Mathematica.
• Some experience in deploying large-scale/distributed systems (e.g., Maven, Docker, AWS, CircleCI, Terraform) is a plus.
