You will join a dynamic group of academics, beamline scientists, post-docs and PhD students using in situsynchrotron, neutron and laser techniques to study advanced powder processes from the nano- to microstructural scales. The group, led by Prof. Lee, is based in the Research Complex at Harwell (www.rc-harwell.ac.uk) on the Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, the UK’s largest site for national laboratories, including the UK’s synchrotron light source, Diamond (www.diamond.ac.uk), ISIS Neutron Source and the Central Laser Facilities. The role will require travel within the UK and internationally to interact with collaborators.

Your role will be to lead in situ imaging experiments of blown powder laser additive manufacturing. You will be funded by Rolls-Royce and a new £10m Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Future Manufacturing Hub in Manufacture using Advanced Powder Processes (MAPP, www.mapp.ac.uk), led by Prof. Todd at Sheffield. You will help design and commission a unique process replicator to allow in situ synchrotron imaging of direct energy deposition (DED), also termed blown powder additive manufacturing. Ideally, you will have experience in instrument design, synchrotron experiments, and quantification of the time-resolved images, or equivalent fields. You will be working with Rolls-Royce and other industrial collaborators to gain novel insights into laser-matter interaction, and apply them to the fabrication/repair of aeroengine components.

MAPP’s vision is to deliver on the promise of powder-based manufacturing processes to provide low energy, low cost, and low waste high value manufacturing routes and products to secure UK manufacturing productivity and growth. MAPP brings together leading research teams from the Universities of Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds, Oxford, and Imperial College London, together with an initial group of 17 industry partners and 6 of the UK’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC) centres. You will work as part of this multi-institutional team, collaborating with experts in processing, characterisation, modelling and control. Your core project will be on radiographic, tomographic and reciprocal space imaging of additive manufacturing; however, you will also perform synchrotron experiments in support of teams working on other processes.
