The School
This permanent appointment of a Professor in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering represents a prospect of exceptional promise for a senior academic working at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Games.
Founded in 1966, the University of Essex School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, is one of the oldest in the UK. Artificial Intelligence has been a pillar of its research since the very beginning, and the School also has a decades-old engagement with Computer Games. It is now seeking an enthusiastic researcher to lead and grow its Games Intelligence Group (which includes both AI as a technology for games and games as a platform for AI).
The School is open to a wide range of research interests in this area, including (but not limited to):
General Videogame AI
- Believable Agents
- Procedural/Adaptive Content Generation
- Interactive Storytelling
- Affective Computing
- Player Modelling
- User Engagement
- Digital Creativity
- AI for Game Design
The Role and Duties
This is a major appointment which presents an outstanding opportunity to shape the future direction of the School’s research in this area.
The successful candidate will be expected to deliver excellent research and design and deliver a broad range of innovative teaching, generate research income, and contribute to the administration and management of the School, and to the local, regional and international profile of the School. You will be expected to take on senior administrative and management roles as well as supervise Masters and PhD students. You will also be expected to pursue research of internationally-recognised importance and quality that will make a significant contribution to the University’s submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercises, enhance the international profile of the University and contribute to the development of its communities of research.
Qualifications and Skills
Candidates should have PhD in a relevant discipline and relevant academic expertise in artificial intelligence, games or a related area. Examples of related areas include but are not limited to: computer science, informatics, mathematics, human-computer interaction and cognitive science. As well as a proven track record of internationally excellent research in areas relevant to computer games and artificial intelligence and a strong track record of published academic output at international levels of recognition, with demonstrable evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future REF programmes.
You should also have the ability to assimilate, interpret and disseminate scientific data and information from different sources and to communicate information appropriately to different types of stakeholders and the ability to establish positive and effective working relationships and partnerships with senior colleagues, academic staff and a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to deliver against a complex portfolio of activities.
This permanent, full-time post will be based at our Colchester Campus, ideally to start on 23 April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
