The College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University are seeking to appoint an outstanding academic leader at Chair level. The role offers the opportunity for an academic with a world-leading profile in an area/ period relevant to the School’s world-leading research profile to also act in a leadership capacity at College level, accountable to the Dean of Research, with a particular focus on external grant capture (specifically from the AHRC).

Building on recent successes, we are looking for an individual with the ability and passion to enhance the School’s research profile, contribute innovatively to our teaching, play a key part in delivering our strategic vision and take on a leadership role in the School. The role also involves delivering targeted leadership and advice that will significantly enhance external grant capture, across all Schools in the College, from a) UK funding councils (particularly the AHRC) and b) European and international schemes.

With an international reputation in your field, you will have an outstanding record of publications and an excellent track record in research-led teaching and research leadership. You will also possess detailed knowledge of the strategic and operational aspects of UK research councils, trusts and charities, with a particular emphasis on AHRC schemes, together with an ability to enhance grant capture in cross-disciplinary areas.

Cardiff University achieved 5th place nationally in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise based on the quality of its research, and 2nd place for Research. English Language and Literature at Cardiff was ranked 10th in the UK on GPA in REF2014, with 85% of its research assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent. The successful candidate will play a key role in leading both School and College towards success in REF2021.
