Detail information about job Linux System Administrator – Scientific Computing. Terms and conditions vacancy

About Us

At the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary science research organisations, the expertise of our computing staff is key to making our research happen. We work with the very latest technologies to drive advances in both hardware and software that have genuine real world applications. Whether it is the search for the Higgs Boson and dark matter, analysing climate data or genomics, our systems tackle the biggest and most challenging problems in scientific computing.

The Scientific Computing Department (SCD) has a vacancy for a talented and motivated individual to join the Data Services Group. The successful applicant will have experience as a Linux System Administrator and will join the team that manages the data storage and data transfer services, including Ceph clusters providing storage for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data and the STFC Cloud.  We are constantly working to increase the efficiency, reliability, and resilience of these systems, and investigate new technologies to help us achieve this. This role will provide an excellent opportunity to further develop skills in Linux system administration, large storage systems, and hardware support.

You will be able to demonstrate good communication skills, good organisational skills, and an analytical approach to problem solving. You will need to provide a share of on call support (services can be supported remotely) and undertake some travel in the UK and overseas, e.g. to CERN.

In addition to the support of services, there are opportunities to work with other "big data" projects and to participate in research in scientific data management. Additional training and certification opportunities are also offered.

About You

If you have the skills below then we would love to hear from you:

  • Experience in the management of Linux (ideally RHEL/SL/CENTOS) machines, ideally in a production environment
  • Experience in at least two of the following:
    • Performance and exception monitoring tools, e.g. Nagios, Ganglia, The Elastic Stack
    • Configuration and management of Linux servers, e.g. using Quattor, Puppet
    • Large-scale data storage technologies, e.g. Ceph
    • Shell scripting using bash and/or another programming language such as perl, Python, or Java
    • RPM building and management
    • Server hardware
    • Writing technical documentation
    • Working in a 24/7 production environment

Benefits:

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance, and flexible working are offered, as well as an onsite nursery, subsidised restaurant, gym, and sports facilities.

Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages.
