The academic staff of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department have wide-ranging expertise in circuits and systems, communications and signal processing, control and power, intelligent systems and networks, and optical and semiconductor devices.

The Department has a strong commitment to conducting internationally competitive and innovative research. Its primary scientific interest is in fundamental research with numerous applications to the environment, healthcare, information and communications technology, industry and energy.

Role summary

We are recruiting to our world-leading FPGA team. We are seeking candidates with detailed expertise in design for FPGAs at a physical level, as part of an instrumentation team working within the PRiME project (http://www.prime-project.org). The role of the instrumentation team is to develop techniques to allow low level control and monitoring of FPGA resources such as slack (http://cas.ee.ic.ac.uk/people/gac1/pubs/JoshFPL13.pdf) and power (http://cas.ee.ic.ac.uk/people/gac1/pubs/EddieFCCM16.pdf).

We are particularly looking for skills in one or more of: 

  • FPGA CAD tools, especially Altera Quartus II, and the use of tcl scripting to drive these tools in unusual ways
  • Device driver and Linux kernel development

To be appointed at Research Associate level, applicants must already hold a PhD (or equivalent).  We are also keen to talk to candidates who will soon receive their PhD in one of these areas.

As well as being able to demonstrate skills and experience in one or more of the above areas, you should have the ability to interact with a wide range of people across a number of partner institutions and with international collaborators, the ability to develop and apply new concepts, and excellent verbal communication skills.  You should also be able to organise your own work with minimal supervision, work to deadlines and demonstrate willingness to work as part of a team.
