Detail information about job Professor of Economics. Terms and conditions vacancy

The Monash Business School, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia wants to appoint a Research Professor of Economics with a specialty in industrial organisation applied to the economics of health policy and health systems. This is a continuing appointment located in the Centre for Health Economics.

We are looking for someone with an international reputation in theoretical and applied industrial organisation with experience in policy analysis. The position will have an attractive remuneration package and the appointment of support research staff.

BackgroundThe Centre for Health Economics is one of the world’s leading research groups in health economics located in the Monash Business School alongside the Department of Economics and the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics. We want to build on our current expertise and over 25 years of applying economic theory to important policy issues in health system design and finance, to examine future challenges to health systems policy in Australia and internationally.

The Centre has focused on four key areas of research in the past five years, recruiting high quality staff who have had considerable success in quality international publications, competitive research grants and fellowships. We will extend that success to strengthen our team and make a larger contribution to international health industry finance and policy analysis developing research that contributes to the public debate and informs policy making.

Why the economics of health markets and policy? We see a particular need for research on competition, quality and productivity in health care, the impact of management on health care output and the effect of networks, cooperation, regulation and competition on the diffusion of innovation in health. We have identified this as an important area where economics has the potential to make a significant contribution to health and wellbeing nationally and internationally with high impact in both academic and policy terms as a consequence of emerging trends in:

  • the use of private sector providers for public health care is a common emerging theme across countries including the UK, USA and Europe
  • novel ways to commission health services relying on economic theories of contestability and incentive design to improve efficiency and quality of care
  • the design of markets and competition in the health care industry as a trending theme in health care internationally (the NDIS commissioning of primary care are examples in Australia)
  • competition and on the role of incentives within health care in the context of the current rapidly changing structure of health care markets, with implications for appropriate competition and regulatory policy
  • design of health care finance and delivery is an issue in all developing and developed countries.

What we are looking forSomeone who has the capacity and experience to lead the expansion of our current academic work in health system evaluation into a substantial program of research in the application of modern industrial organisation theory to a range of contemporary issues in the design of national and international health system finance and delivery and help us to provide:

  • a strong presence at the intersection between the public and private sectors of health, and allow us to engage with the health industry and government offering advice on the right way to organise and deliver health services
  • opportunities for new and enhanced collaborations in health and wellbeing research with academic partners in North America, Europe and Asia including academic and PhD exchange programs
  • a platform for simulating grant funding initiatives with industry partners in national and international competitive research grants.
