Fixed Term (3 years)

About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields.

STFC’s Scientific Computing Department (SCD) develops leading edge software, computer and data storage infrastructures through innovative research to support the work of world class science both within STFC and internationally; contributing to the solution of grand scientific computing challenges.

About The Role

We now have an exciting opportunity for a researcher in numerical analysis to join the SCD’s Computational Mathematics Group; one of the UK’s leading such groups, with a focus on research in numerical linear algebra and optimisation. This is a highly specialised role that will appeal to ambitious and highly-motivated numerical analysts.

The role will involve undertaking novel independent scientific research at an international level in an area of computational numerical analysis that complements and contributes to the work of the Group and is in line with the research grant “Least Squares: Fit for the Future”, awarded by the EPSRC Mathematics Programme.

Further responsibilities include:

  • Developing national and international research collaborations
  • Working with colleagues on the development and expansion of projects involving STFC scientific facilities, notably the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source, Diamond Light Source and RAL Space.

The role will require some UK and overseas travel, including attending and speaking at conferences and workshops and giving seminars at universities.

Successful applicants will be appointed at either Band D or Band E of STFC’s staffing hierarchy, depending on the strength of your skills, experience and qualifications. Appointments at the higher Band E will only be considered for candidates with at least three years demonstrably-successful postdoctoral research in an area that matches the interests of current Group members, along with experience in managing projects and software development in Fortran and/or C for others to use.

About You

You will hold a PhD in numerical analysis, computational science or a related discipline, with preference for those with a strong emphasis on optimisation or numerical linear algebra.

You must be able to initiate and carry out high quality independent research.

You will also demonstrate experience of:

  • Initiating independent research, as well as working effectively as part of a research group
  • High-quality software development
  • Writing technical reports and publishing papers in leading numerical analysis journals, commensurate with career stage

For Band E, you will additionally have:

  • A proven track record of at least three-years postdoctoral independent research in numerical linear algebra and/or optimisation at an international level resulting in high-quality research publications
  • Experience of managing projects
  • Experience of software development in Fortran or C and familiarity with working in a Linux environment.

Experience of software engineering, Unix systems, Matlab or similar, parallel computing, emerging many-core architectures and programming using OpenMP and/or MPI is highly desirable.

Benefits

An excellent index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexi-time are offered. Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages (http://www.stfccareers.co.uk)
