Detail information about job Scientific Technician - Field Entomologist. Terms and conditions vacancy
Overview Of Role
We have an exciting new position available for a Field Entomologist in the new Department of Biointeractions and Crop Protection. The postholder will contribute to the recently-funded ‘Smart Crop Protection’ Programme on two projects: 1) Developing real time sensors for monitoring of crop pests and 2) Investigating the potential of plant signalling to recruit natural enemies of crop pests for conservation biological control.
The post holder is required to have a background in entomology with experience in field working including arthropod sampling methodologies. For Project 2, replicated field experiments investigating the effect of plant signalling will be sampled by the post holder throughout the growing season for crop pests and beneficial insects using a variety of methods. This is physically demanding work. Excellent taxonomical identification skills are required for both projects, to accurately identify and quantify insects from traps and field-collected samples.
Project 1 will require the post holder to handle insects in the lab and then fly them through experimental sensors. The post holder will be required to develop methodology for facilitating insect flight through the sensors; good problem solving skills are therefore needed. This Project has an important technological component for which it would be an advantage if the post holder was practically-orientated with an interest or previous experience in engineering or a similar discipline.
It is expected that the post holder will also have a range of computer skills that illustrate a competency in Powerpoint, Excel and Word to help others write reports, prepare presentations, graphs and to perform calculations etc.
This post is available for 3 years and has a salary range of £24,225 to £26,573 per annum.
Interviews will be held in the 1st week of October 2017.
