Applications are invited for a social scientist with experience of engaging with farmers to work full time as a Postdoctoral SWEEP Impact Fellow on the project ‘Decision support for the 25 Year Environment Plan: The North Devon Biosphere and Pioneer’.

The successful candidates will engage with a variety of stakeholders to improve the understanding of North Devon’s beneficiaries of natural capital, the role of natural capital in the future of farm business models, and the barriers to change. The project will deliver impact in three key areas:

  • Mechanisms to future proof farm businesses - working with farmers and stakeholders to integrate ecological understanding with future farm business models including their woodlands and information on public preferences, the project will explore potential post-Brexit farm business approaches to provide sustainable incomes for farmers across a range of farming sectors.
  • Boosting the woodland economy, working with the North Devon Biosphere Partnership in support of its Woodland Enterprise Zone and provide essential tools and approaches to support its progress.
  • Integration of the work on woodlands and farming with inputs from wider SWEEP activities to understand the implications and opportunities for improving water quality and reducing productivity losses. Co-ordination between terrestrial, estuarine, and marine stakeholders to reduce nutrient and pesticide run-off from agricultural land use, to promote a shared understanding of the relationship between terrestrial and marine environments.

The successful applicant will be about to complete their PhD (or equivalent qualifications/experience, if appointed on Grade E), or have completed a PhD (or equivalent qualifications/experience, if appointed on Grade F) that provides them with a solid grounding in relevant academic skills.
