About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

ISIS is an intense pulsed neutron source providing beams of neutrons and muons to enable scientists to study the structure and properties of matter for the benefit of Science and Engineering in the UK and abroad.  The Health Physics section provides radiation safety support for all operations within ISIS and other facilities on the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) site.

About The Role

We require an experienced Health Physics professional to assist the Health Physics Section Leader (HPSL) in managing the radiological safety programme and supervising the Health Physics teams.

The role includes responsibility for planning routine surveys as well as support for active maintenance activities with relevant engineers and scientists. In all cases maintaining suitable and sufficient records.

You will also provide support to the waste management programme including day to day management of discharge monitoring.

Duties will include:

  • Routine radiation and contamination hazard assessments of operational activities based on measurement programmes and induced radioactivity calculations
  • Providing assistance to ISIS Group Leaders with control and management of their radiation designated areas
  • Management of health physics sealed sources, providing a leak testing service for all site sealed sources
  • Provision of professional health physics advice on operational procedures
  • Development of new health physics operating procedures, and provision of monthly reports
  • Managing the Respiratory Protection Equipment programme.

The role is challenging and will provide excellent opportunities for personal development and training.

The working of some unsociable hours may be necessary on occasions in support of operations.

About You

You will be educated to degree level in a scientific or engineering discipline, or demonstrate considerable relevant experience, and will have undertaken recognised training in Health Physics.

It would be desirable to be an accredited RPA and we can support those working towards accreditation.

You will have significant experience with practical Health Physics at a professional level, with an ability to select, check and use a wide range of Health Physics instruments and equipment.

You must have knowledge of relevant regulations including Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999, the carriage of Dangerous Goods and the Use of Transportable Equipment Regulations 2009, and Environmental Permitting Regulations (England and Wales) 2016.

You must display excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills in English, demonstrate a proactive approach to providing support to other operational teams, and good IT skills including Outlook, Word and Excel.

Ideally you would have good knowledge/understanding of radiological protection issues affecting large accelerator facilities and be a member of the Society For Radiological Protection.

You must also be able to wear a respirator and enter contaminated environments as a classified radiation worker, be able to move freely around mixed level experimental areas and able to attend for emergency situations involving radiation or contamination.

You should have a full driving licence and be available for occasional UK travel.

Experience in radiological emergency response is desirable.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered, as well as an onsite nursery, subsidised restaurant, gym and sports facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
