The British Geological Survey (BGS) is one of the world's leading and forward thinking geological science institutes with a focus on both public good science for government and geoscientific research to understand earth and environmental processes. Vacancies have arisen for two highly Field Environmental Scientists at the Lyell Centre in Edinburgh.

You will provide support to the UK GeoEnergy Observatories (UKGEOS) project is NERC's response to the UK Government's announcement in the 2014 Autumn Statement that it will allocate £31m to create world-class, subsurface energy research test centres, to be operated by the BGS.

You will assist with the development and implementation of the hydrogeological, hydrological and other environmental elements of the baseline characterisation and environmental monitoring programme for UKGEOS. The work will involve significant periods of fieldwork, carrying out measurement, sampling and testing as well as desk study and some laboratory based work.  You will focus on characterising the hydrogeology, surface water, soil chemistry, soil gas at a site in Scotland through implementation of monitoring/testing programmes, field-based sampling, establishment of automated monitoring systems and the interpretation and presentation of results. This work will be part of a co-ordinated programme of environmental characterisation that includes water, chemistry, seismicity and ground motion. You will also contribute to preparation of technical reports, scientific publications and presentations.

You should be educated to 2:1 in a relevant degree and possibly have either an MSc/MSci in Hydrogeology or Environmental Science (or related subject) or relevant experience.  You must also possess good numeracy (data and statistical analysis) and communication skills (oral and written). The post involves team working and spending periods undertaking fieldwork, therefore you should be able to work effectively with others, have good time management skills, hold a valid driving licence and be willing to drive as part of field work duties. 

These posts are fixed term until 31 March 2020.  Starting salary will be between £22,224 per annum to £24,112 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.  A generous benefits package is also offered, including a company pension scheme, childcare allowance, free parking, 30 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays.
