An exciting opportunity is available for a Researcher to join our Devices Division at MHRA.

The MHRA is responsible for regulating all medicines and medical devices in the UK by ensuring they work and are acceptably safe. This post is situated in Devices Division; within Devices Information and Operations Group (DIOG). The purpose of DIOG is to help realise MHRA’s vision for vigilance and ensuring safer healthcare products through a world-leading system of proactive safety management, enabled by digital technologies.

MHRA devices and Imperial College are partnering to undertake a pilot study to explore the development of a human factors approach to incident reporting using in-vitro-diagnostics (blood glucose meters) and possibly one other devices area as exploratory case studies.

Purpose of the Role

The post holder will be employed by MHRA and will work across MHRA devices division to gather data and work with Imperial as part of a small but dynamic group carrying out multi-disciplinary research. The Devices Researcher will carry out qualitative and quantitative research as part of a joint project between the NIHR funded Diagnostic Evidence Co-operative London (http://london.dec.nihr.ac.uk/) which is based at Imperial College, London and the MHRA. This will include qualitative data analysis, stakeholder analysis, clinical pathway mapping and impact analysis.

Works closely with: Imperial research team as well as across Devices Information and Operations Group and Devices Safety and Surveillance Group. With research support from Principal Research Fellow, NIHR DEC London at Imperial College, London

Person Requirements:

Qualifications, Licenses and professional memberships:

  • Master or PhD in a relevant discipline, e.g. human factors, psychology, public health, engineering or equivalent relevant research, industrial or commercial or equivalent regulatory experience

Experience:

  • Extensive experience and ability in qualitative research
  • Proven ability to carry out different types of interviews and to analyse interview data
  • In-depth knowledge of multidisciplinary research
  • In-depth Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods and statistical procedures 
  • Recent practical experience within a research environment
  • Computer literate with a good knowledge of different computer programs with experience in data presentation and statistical analyses.
  • Ability to conduct detailed literature review
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts

Desirable requirements

  • Experience of working with medical devices/regulation, especially in the diagnostic areas
  • Track record of publications
  • Experiences of funding applications
  • Experience in using specialised qualitative analysis software
