We are seeking a Project Officer to work as a member of the ATHENA and SMILE project teams. ATHENA Advanced Telescope for High-Energy Astrophysics will be an X-ray telescope designed to address the Cosmic Vision science theme of “The Hot and Energetic Universe”. SMILE (Solar Magnetospheric Ionospheric Link Explorer will investigate the interaction between Earth's protective shield – the magnetosphere – and the supersonic solar wind.
You will work closely with scientists and engineers on both projects performing complex 3D modelling of the radiation shielding in space and developing new equipment for experimental testing of shielding material samples. You will also develop models as inputs into the C++ based Geant4 system and will help to process the outputs, specifically with reference to novel shielding structures and the mechanical stability and appropriate nature of any materials proposed.
You will have a BSc in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject with experience of using 3D modelling software packages (such as Solidworks or similar) and will have good problem solving and analytical skills. Strong verbal and written skills, good presentation skills and the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues from a wide range of backgrounds are essential.
