Location: University Park

Salary: £38,183 to £46,924 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £29799 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

Applications are invited for the above post at the Centre for Aerospace Manufacturing (CAM) within the Faculty of Engineering.

This post will focus on the development of advanced automation systems, intelligent robotics and context aware end-effector systems. Applicants will engage with an ambitious platform development and testing programme that is robust, well maintained, well documented and managed. The successful candidate will develop new concepts and prototype industrial systems, perform extensive technology testing and evaluation against set requirements and prepare prototype systems for subsequent higher Technology Readiness Level (TRL) applications.

It will be part of the researcher’s responsibility to interact with both research partners and industrial partners (as well as their supply chain) to drive the development and implementation of these new technologies. This post may involve travel to partner sites across Europe.

Candidates must have an understanding, and preferably direct experience, of one or more of the following areas:

  • Robotics and automation control
  • Automated manufacturing and assembly processes
  • Control system development
  • Flexible reconfigurable systems and tooling
  • Metrology systems
  • Systems engineering involving the coupling or embedding of large software projects to hardware
  • Significant programming knowledge in C++/ .Net / PLC control systems/ robot control software (or similar)

Key tasks for the post will include:

  • Development and implementation of new concepts for automated assembly
  • Testing and validation of technology demonstrators
  • Management of automated assembly systems development and validation
  • Liaison with industrial and academic partners and technology suppliers
  • Reporting to key stakeholders
  • Dissemination of research through publications, presentations, poster displays and workshops

Candidates must hold (or expect to shortly receive) a PhD or equivalent in an appropriate field. They should be confident, have excellent R&D and communication skills and the ability to work in a team. Experience of working with UK and EU industries is preferred.

This post is offered on a fixed term contract for 2 years.
