Detail information about job Lecturer in Anti-Fungal Immunity. Terms and conditions vacancy

The Medical Research Council (MRC) has awarded MRC Centre status for Medical Mycology to the University’s Aberdeen Fungal Group (AFG). This new MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (MRC CMM) at the University of Aberdeen will spearhead innovative research and training to generate knowledge that will improve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of fungal diseases. The MRC CMM represents a joint £6.5m investment by both the MRC and the University of Aberdeen.

We seek an exceptional, up-and-coming scientist who will drive their own independent research programme, alongside collaborative projects with other MRC CMM members (www.abdn.ac.uk/cmm), in the area of adaptive anti-fungal immunity.

The Aberdeen Fungal Group (AFG) represents roughly 25% of UK scientists working in medical mycology, and is one of the largest medical mycology groupings worldwide. The scientists involved are internationally recognised leaders and new investigators, who work together as a coherent team. The AFG was recently cited through an independent assessment as “...the leading UK institution for mycology research, receiving over one-third of the total [UK] investments” and the AFG have contributed many of the most significant recent advances in medical mycology and are amongst the most highly cited scientists in their fields.

Although possessing capacity in innate immunity, the AFG lacks expertise in experimental adaptive immunity. While there have been significant advances in this field, our understanding of these key antifungal responses is still in its infancy and they offer great potential for future therapeutic exploitation.

This Lectureship post is therefore aimed at bringing this expertise to the AFG and it is expected that the individual appointed to this post will integrate into, and contribute to, the highly collaborative environment of this group. The post holder will also help facilitate the research objectives of the MRC CMM in exploring the influence of fungal and host components on the development of adaptive immunity and their diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic potential.

Salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 7 (£39,992 - £47,722 per annum), with placement according to qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Professor Gordon Brown, Professor Gordon Brown Director, MRC Centre for Medical Mycology (Tel: 01224 437 355 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Should you require a visa to undertake paid employment in the UK you will be required to fulfil the minimum point’s criteria to be granted a Certificate of Sponsorship and Tier 2 visa. As appropriate, at the time an offer of appointment is made you will be asked to demonstrate that you fulfil the criteria in respect of financial maintenance and competency in English. Please do not hesitate to contact Natalie Reid, HR Adviser, ([email protected]) for further information on this.
