Detail information about job Postdoctoral Training Fellow. Terms and conditions vacancy

Contract: Fixed-term (4 years)

Short Introduction/Summary

The position has been created to ensure the successful implementation of a research project that aims to develop tools to better understand the complex and dynamic interactions between M. tuberculosis and host cells. In particular, this project will investigate the dynamics of autophagy and host cell death pathways during M. tuberculosis infection of host cells and potential pathways of mycobacterial dissemination in mouse models of tuberculosis.

The Francis Crick Institute is a new research institute with an international reputation for cutting edge research into basic biology and is committed to training the next generation of research scientists. The Four-Year Postdoctoral Training programme is part of this commitment and many postdocs leave to set up their own research groups. Postdocs also benefit from living and working in one of the world’s greatest scientific, cultural and cosmopolitan capital.

Project Scope/ Description

Max Gutierrez research group is interested in the area of cellular microbiology of M. tuberculosis with a focus on the innate immune system and phagocytosis. In particular, we are interested in understanding how M. tuberculosis survive within host cells and the mechanisms that host cells use to eliminate intracellular M. tuberculosis (Lerner et al., 2016 J Clin Invest; Lerner et al., 2017 J Cell Biol; Schnettger et al., 2017 Cell Host Microbe).

The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical discovery institute dedicated to understanding the fundamental biology underlying health and disease. Its work is helping to understand why disease develops and to translate discoveries into new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases.

An independent organisation, its founding partners are the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK, Wellcome, UCL (University College London), Imperial College London and King’s College London.

The Crick was formed in 2015, and in 2016 it moved into a brand new state-of-the-art building in central London which brings together 1500 scientists and support staff working collaboratively across disciplines, making it the biggest biomedical research facility under a single roof in Europe.

The Francis Crick Institute will be world-class with a strong national role. Its distinctive vision for excellence includes commitments to collaboration; to developing emerging talent and exporting it the rest of the UK; to public engagement; and to helping turn discoveries into treatments as quickly as possible to improve lives and strengthen the economy.
