Founded on the university’s long-standing research in to shape casting, liquid metal processing and more than 20 years of collaboration in research with Rolls-Royce, the High Temperature Research Centre represents the next step in expanding the university’s research capability in the field. Established by a £20M HEFCE UKRPIF award in partnership with Rolls-Royce plc, a 5,800 m2 production-scale research and development facility has been built. Equipped with state of the art casting and material characterisation equipment the Centre’s research is focused on investment casting and related technologies for turbine systems in aerospace and power generation, medical devices, transport, etc.

By conducting world class research across Technology- and Manufacturing Capability- Readiness Levels 1 to 6 and 1 to 5 respectively the Centre will enable fast, flexible and responsive discovery, development, maturing and deployment of materials and technologies. Research themes within the Centre include:

  • Solidification science and material discovery
  • Processing-microstructure-property relationships
  • Formulation engineering
  • Process modelling and instrumentation
  • Computer science and optimisation
  • Mechanical engineering and automation

In prosecuting it’s research agenda the HTRC will train future technical leaders in the field, equipping them and our partners to deliver world-class manufacturing research and development.

The Centre is an autonomous research unit within the School of Metallurgy and Materials. This newly created post marks a strategic strengthening of the HTRC academic team, and is underpinned by the University Discretionary Investment Fund. Working with the Centre Director the appointee will support the growth and widening of HTRC activities across industry sectors both upstream and downstream of the principal processes, technologies and materials.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience of establishing and successfully running a multi-disciplinary research group in academia and/or industry.  We are seeking candidates with:

  • A proven track record in the area of casting technology research
  • Sustained success in research leadership of significant academic or industrial projects
  • A substantial portfolio of successful bids for research and development awards and contracts
  • A comprehensive and sustained range of published work
  • Extensive experience of collaboration, as evidenced for example through multi-institutional programmes and publications
