Detail information about job Fixed term Technology Transfer Research Fellow - Advanced Characterisation on Materials and Thin Films for 3rd Generation Photovolatic Devices. Terms and conditions vacancy

Salary: £28,452 to £31,076 per annum (pro-rata if part time) together with USS pension benefits

Applicants are invited for the position of Fixed Term Technology Transfer Research Fellow in the College of Engineering to work for the Sêr Cymru Solar Research Programme.

The Sêr Cymru Solar initiative is a £7m initiative by the Welsh government to establish a research cluster focused on the development of low cost, large area photovoltaic technologies. It is led by Prof. James Durrant, with co-directorship by Prof. David Worsley and Prof. Jenny Nelson. The initiative is based within the University of Swansea’s SPECIFIC Integrated Knowledge Centre, with strong external collaborations, including in particular partnership with solar research programme at Imperial College London. It is aligned with the primary focus of the £20m SPECIFIC IKC and its commercial partners on ambient printing / coating of energy technologies for the built environment. The initiative aims to address the key scientific and engineering challenges for the development and evaluation of ambient, solution processed photovoltaic technologies.

We are seeking applications for a Technology Transfer Research Fellow to join the Sêr Solar team in the College of Engineering’s Materials Research Centre on an EPSRC funded ‘Solar Grand Challenge’ project. The successful applicant will be responsible for the characterisation of crystalline materials used in the fabrication of perovskite and organic solar cells. The applicant will develop an XRD database of reference crystalline materials and contribute towards a better understanding the role of crystal size, orientation and defects on the performance and degradation of lead-halide perovskite materials using combined XRD and EBSD characterisation techniques. The applicant will also support basic chemical analysis of these materials by XPS analysis.

The successful applicant will join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team targeting the development and evaluation of printed solar cells, and will also be expected to work closely with collaborators in this project including Imperial College London (Prof. James Durrant). The applicant will be responsible for the advanced characterization of materials the photovoltaic devices and small modules (including the interlayers), and work with other team members to undertake optical spectroscopic, morphological, functional, and processability studies of films and devices.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Physical Sciences or a related subject preferably with research background in advanced characterisation of materials coupled with the ability to interpret and disseminate analytical data. The applicants are also expected to have practical laboratory skills in the deposition of organic and inorganic thin layers of semi-conductor materials.
