Detail information about job College Six-hour Stipendiary Lecturership in Modern British History. Terms and conditions vacancy

Balliol College proposes, if a suitable candidate applies, to appoint a stipendiary six-hour Lecturer in History for Michaelmas Term 2017 (i.e. 1 October to 15 December). The post is for one term only (to cover the teaching duties of Dr Simon Skinner, while he is on sabbatical leave).

The successful candidate will be expected to teach six hours per week on average during term time. She or he will receive a stipend of £4,342 for the duration. In addition, s/he will be entitled to some Senior Common Room rights, and will have shared access to a teaching room in college.

History at BalliolBalliol’s exceptional record of teaching and research in History owes much to the spread of expertise provided by four fellows, as well as by the commitment to History which it advertises in terms of our ability to attract the best applicants for places at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A number of distinguished historians have been fellows of Balliol, including Christopher Hill, Sir Richard Southern, Richard Cobb, Colin Lucas, and Maurice Keen.

DutiesThe lecturer should be able to provide undergraduate teaching for the two modern British History papers in the Part One examinations, Prelims, History of the British Isles V (1688-1848) and History of the British Isles VI (1830-1951). In addition, the lecturer will be required to contribute to the teaching of the historiography and method papers (Approaches to History and Historiography in Prelims; Disciplines of History in the Final Honour School) and to contribute to supervising undergraduate theses within college. This is a college appointment, and does not carry any faculty duties within the University. Details of the papers are available at www.history.ox.ac.uk, and further guidance is available from Simon Skinner (see below).

In addition to the stated hours of teaching, the lecturer will be required to perform a range of duties including conducting admission interviews in December; participating in the administration and organisation of History teaching in college; undertaking pastoral care of students; and setting and marking college exams.

Application procedureApplications should be sent to [email protected] by 12.00 noon on Tuesday 12 September 2017 and should include:

  • A brief cover letter.
  • A curriculum vitae.
  • A brief description of the papers that the applicant is willing to teach and previous teaching experience. (This can be incorporated into the cover letter if suitable).
  • A brief description of current and proposed research (no more than one page).
  • The names of two academic referees (One of these may provide a teaching-focused reference).

Applicants should ask their two named referees to write directly to [email protected] by the same closing date. Electronic applications and references are preferred.

Applicants wishing to make informal enquiries regarding this post may contact Simon Skinner ([email protected]), or the Senior Tutor, Nicola Trott ([email protected]).

Interviews are likely to take place on 18 or 19 September 2017. Shortlisted applicants who are not able to travel to Oxford for an interview will be offered the opportunity to participate in the interview remotely via electronic means.

All applicants are asked to fill in an Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form to help us fulfil our duties as an Equal Opportunities Employer.
