Balliol College invites applications for a fixed-term Non-stipendiary Lectureship in Psychology. The appointment is available for the period 1 October 2017 – 30 September 2018.

Medical Sciences at BalliolBalliol aims to admit 4-5 undergraduates each year to read for degrees in Medicine, and 2-3 in Biomedical Sciences. The successful applicant will work with Fellows in Medical Sciences Professor Martin Burton, Professor Robin Choudhury, Dr Lisa Walker and Professor Manuela Zaccolo; and College Lecturers Associate Professor Victoria Bajo Lorenzana (Neuroscience), Dr Tom Cosker (Anatomy), Dr Judith Fox (Biochemistry), Dr Piers Nye (Physiology). The post offers the opportunity to develop skills in teaching and academic administration in a supportive environment.

DutiesThe successful candidate will be required:

  • To undertake tutorial provision throughout the year for 1st year Biomedical Sciences students in the ‘Behaviour’ part of the course;
  • To undertake intensive tutorial provision in HT for 2nd year Medical Sciences students for their Psychology for Medicine course;
  • To undertake tutorials for 2nd year and 3rd year biomedical sciences students and 3rd year medicine students as part of their FHS courses;
  • To assist in undergraduate admissions for Biomedical Sciences.

Selection CriteriaThe appointee will be able to demonstrate:

  • An ability to provide a high standard of teaching to very able and challenging undergraduates;
  • The ability to undertake pastoral responsibilities for undergraduate students;
  • Good communication skills and evidence of the sensitivity required to deal effectively with pastoral duties.

Preference will be given to candidates who have, or expect to have completed by 1 October 2017, a doctorate in Psychology.

Remuneration and benefitsThe post holder will receive a termly retainer of £122, and tuition will be paid at the normal Senior Tutors’ Committee rates. Allowances: the post holder would normally be invited to lunch and dine in the Senior Common Room once a week during term time, at the college’s expense.

There is no entitlement to sabbatical leave.
