The IT Services department is seeking to recruit a Senior Systems Administrator to work within a team of technical IT staff which has responsibility for the design, development, support and maintenance of the University’s mission critical Unix (Linux and Solaris) systems. This role is will act as a technical lead for all aspects of Linux/Unix administration, including input into strategy, design and implementation.
You will be highly motivated and enthusiastic about working in a fast paced and constantly changing environment. You will have the ability to adapt to rapid changes both in technology and working practices. You will need to demonstrate the ability to develop your skills with the minimum of external input.
It is critical that you understand the concepts and problems of configuration management such as Puppet, large scale virtualisation clusters and remote administration (e.g. lights out management), working on an enterprise scale with many levels of complexity.
You will have knowledge of the practice of systems administration, including: virtualisation, automation, monitoring, identity management, security, patching and building, installing and configuring open source software. You should have experience of scalable and resilient systems having managed multiple servers in a heterogeneous and complex environment.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are essential to the role. You will be at ease communicating in person, by phone and email, with the ability to communicate at all levels. You must be committed to delivering an excellent level of customer service for staff and students while also meeting the organisations strategic goals and financial objectives.
Suitable applicants must have a degree relevant to IT Services or vocational experience which demonstrates equivalent professional development. ITILv3 Foundation Diploma is desirable.
