UK-NSIC is a new shared vision creating an ‘Open Innovation’ centre, led by Swansea University, with Tata Steel UK initially aligned as the core partner. The centre will lead a transformation of the strip steel industry in the UK, which supplies major manufacturing activities including; packaging, construction and automotive. Tata Steel will be transferring its RD&I (Research Development & Innovation) equipment in the UK to Swansea University by Quarter 4 of 2017, to create phase 1 of this new and exciting innovation centre.
The exciting role of Technology Support Officer (TSO) for Process & Product Development will provide technical and operational based support, initially for the relocation and re-installation of equipment from the Swinden Technology Centre (Tata Steel’s UK R&D Centre) to Swansea University. Following this transition period, the role will involve the continuous operation of the equipment, providing Swansea with research excellence in the fields of Steel manufacturing, fracture & fatigue, primary processing and process & product development. Once located in Swansea, the equipment will form an integral role in providing the UK with the open access Steel Innovation Centre that the UK so desperately requires. UK-NSIC will be housed at the former Engineering Building on Swansea University’s Singleton Campus, during phase 1 (2017 – 2019), however, a longer-term project involving the building of a new purpose designed facility (Phase 2), will expand UK-NSIC’s capabilities and partnership potential, creating a network facility, which is expected to be operational towards the end of 2019.
The successful applicant will join a new team of industry focussed academics, researchers, technologists and industrial experts, who collectively, will transform the UK steel industry, into a global leader in low carbon iron and steelmaking, with particular specialisms in; novel materials development, late stage product diversification, value adding coatings technology and novel construction materials, for creating active building facades.

The role will provide specialist technological support across a wide range of equipment, including the Continuous Annealing Simulator (CASIM), Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas TIG/Metal Inert Gas MIG), heat treatment and wear testers to the Steel and wider metals industries. The post holder will be required to be the primary operator of; the CASIM and TIG/MIG welders and provide support to the Heat Treatment and Wear Testing facilities.
The role will require proven competencies in Process & Product Development with a background working within this area.
