The successful applicant will carry out a wide range of duties including being involved in the detailed phenotyping of patients with USH2A retinopathy and RDH12-related LCA to characterise naturalhistory and identify suitable participants for clinical trials.
The post holder will be integrated in a large team of clinicians and scientists developing new treatments for retinal diseases. He/she will acquire expertise in the use and interpretation of a range of psychophysical assessments including microperimetry and detailed colour vision assessments, and imaging studies including fundus photography, autofluorescence imaging, high-resolution optical coherence tomography and adaptive optics imaging.
The post will suit a person wishing to develop a career in clinical research. He/she will have the opportunity to produce scientific papers, and be expected to register for a higher degree (MD).
The position is funded for a period of 2 years in the first instance.
Essential requirements include MRCOphth/FRCOphth or equivalent and excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication between the investigators, members of the trial support team and the subjects and their families.
Whilst experience in some of the above mentioned techniques would be an advantage, full training will be provided where necessary, so candidates lacking direct experience in these areas but having the necessary background skills and showing technical aptitude are also encouraged to apply.
The successful candidate will be bright, independent and highly motivated, but willing and able to work effectively as part of a team.
