Detail information about job Research Fellow in Medical Device Development. Terms and conditions vacancy

Location: Leeds - Main Campus

Faculty/Service: Faculty of Engineering

School/Institute: School of Mechanical Engineering

Category: Research

Contract Type: Fixed Term (1 year (external funding))

Are you an enthusiastic and motivated researcher with an interest in applying engineering approaches to medical engineering challenges? Would you like to use mechanical design and experimental methods to improve equipment for the assessment of bowel disease? Are you interested in the opportunity to gain experience working in a cross-disciplinary project with academics, clinicians and industry?

You will deliver a key part of a new project funded by the charity Crohn’s and Colitis UK:

“Endo-spray: A device to improve chromoendoscopic surveillance for IBD to reduce time taken and improve the utilization of this technique in routine NHS practice.”

Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK. People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have a bowel cancer risk 2-3 times higher than normal. The cancers often occur at a much younger age. Cancer and IBD symptoms are similar, so cancer diagnosis may be delayed and less curable. The most effective method for cancer surveillance in IBD patients is Chromoendoscopy (CE), involving spraying a blue coloured dye on the bowel mucosa through an endoscope. However, application of CE is currently limited by poor equipment. In this project you will build on our proof-of-concept work to design and test a prototype spray system for improved delivery of CE. We aim to produce a pre-commercial prototype for clinical evaluation and commercial translation.

The post will be jointly supervised between Mr Venkat Subramanian (Leeds Teaching Hospitals), Dr Pete Culmer and Professor Nik Kapur (Mechanical Engineering). You will be based in the School of Mechanical Engineering, but may visit Leeds Teaching Hospitals, and in this case you may need to obtain a Research Passport.

Holding a PhD (or close to completion), or with equivalent experience, in an engineering or science discipline that involves device design and experimental methods, you will have expertise in engineering design and design software and proven experience in taking experimental measurements and device fabrication and testing.

To explore the post further or for any queries you may have, please contact:

Dr Pete Culmer, School of Mechanical Engineering, Tel: +44 (0)113 343 2141 or email: [email protected]
