Summary

We are seeking an excellent Linux systems engineer/administrator interested in growing their experience and skills in advanced computing (HPC, Cloud) and Research Data Storage services for Science.

You will join the Research Computing Platforms team within the Scientific Computing group to support and develop the institute’s HPC, Cloud, and Spectrum Scale high performance storage cluster, and associated HSM and Backup systems, working closely with research labs and scientific instrument service providers to support their vital research work.

You will be at the forefront of technology, working with peers in other institutions in the UK and abroad, together with scientists, engineers, and systems manufacturers to give our institute the most advanced computing and storage infrastructure and tools to perform data intensive multi-disciplinary research in a vibrant and exciting research environment. 

Due to the highly collaborative and fast-paced nature of our work, we are looking for people who:

  • Great interpersonal and communication skills, with proven ability to work as part of a team
  • Are capable of effectively managing their own time and priorities
  • Enjoy solving problems within tight deadlines
  • Are self-motivated learners with a track record of continually updating their skills
  • Ideally, have a good understanding of research environments (e.g. research background)

Technical skills we are looking for:

  • Excellent Linux systems engineering and troubleshooting skills (Red Hat, Centos)
  • Networking design and operation (TCP/IP, ideally Infiniband)
  • Network storage operation and integration (SMB, NFS)
  • Strong scripting skills in (shell and python or perl)
  • Good working knowledge of monitoring, and log analysis tools (Icinga, Graphana, ElkStack)

The following skills will be advantageous:

  • Knowledge of system and service tools for HPC, Cloud or Research Data Storage and large-scale systems (SLURM, XCat, SaltStack, Ansible, OpenStack, Docker, Ceph, GPFS/Spectrum Scale, iRODS)
  • Experience with deployment and testing of scientific applications (modules, Easybuild, Singularity, Shifter)
  • Up-to-date knowledge of HPC acceleration technologies and tools (Many-core CPUs, GPU, FPGA, Xeon Phi)
