Kaplan International Pathways run embedded colleges on the campuses of eight UK universities, including the Universities of Glasgow, Liverpool, York and Nottingham, as well as an “off-campus” pathway college in the heart of London - Kaplan International College London, which works in partnership with the University of York, the University of Birmingham, Cranfield University, Westminster University, City, University of London, and Aston University, offering programmes of study designed to prepare international students for entry to these universities at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

KICL has been offering international students university preparation courses since 2008 and today welcomes hundreds of students from more than 70 countries. Through a combination of high quality teaching and strong support throughout the programme, our students go on to a wide variety of degree programmes from engineering and finance to law and journalism. Our vibrant off-campus college is located just seconds from Borough Market, in one of the capital’s most historic and lively areas.

Sessional English Language and Study Skills Tutors are required on a contractual basis to expand the college’s pool of teaching staff. Appointees will be required to teach English language and/or study skills modules to students on university preparation courses up to and including pre-master’s level. These posts will be of particular interest to candidates who especially enjoy, and have experience of, working with international students preparing to enter university in the UK.

Your main responsibilities will include:

Teaching Duties:

Teach students by planning effective teaching to enable learning and progression through:

  • Identifying clear teaching objectives and specifying how these will be taught and assessed
  • Setting tasks which challenge students and ensure high levels of engagement and interest
  • Setting appropriate and demanding expectations, clear targets, and building on prior knowledge and attainment
  • Making effective use of assessment and ensure complete coverage of module content
  • Ensuring students acquire and consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding relevant to the subject
  • Coordinating one or more modules as directed by the ELTAS Co-ordinator
  • Liaise with the ELTAS Co-ordinator to ensure implementation of all College policies and best practice

Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting:

  • Mark and monitor students’ formative and summative assessments, and set targets for progress where required
  • Assess and record students’ progress and keep records as required by the ELTAS Co-ordinator
  • Prepare and present information for inclusion in End of Term reports for Sponsors, Parents and Guardians

Pastoral Duties:

  • Act in the capacity of Personal Tutor to a specified number of students and meet with them on a regular basis
  • Alert appropriate staff to problems experienced by students and make recommendations as to how these may be resolved
  • Monitor the attendance and academic progress of personal tutees regularly

  • Operate at all times within the policies and practices of the College
  • Establish effective working relationships and set a good example through personal and professional conduct
  • Endeavour to give every student the opportunity to reach their full academic potential and meet high expectations
  • Contribute to the life of the College through effective participation in meetings and management systems necessary with which to operate the College smoothly
  • Take responsibility for continuing professional development and duties in relation to College policies and procedures

About you:

You will enjoy working with international students, be student-facing, performance driven and enjoy the challenge of being involved in projects at an early stage of development. In addition the successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum of a CELTA, and a DELTA and/or Master’s Degree in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, or a related subject, is essential
  • Experience of teaching on university preparation courses up to Pre-Master’s level, or at an equivalent level
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and updating teaching materials, and experience of working with a Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) is desirable
  • Competence in administration and IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to work under pressure to deadlines
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to be a performance driven team player

Special requirements: Appointments will be subject to successful clearance from the Disclosure Barring Service (formerly CRB), and on receiving satisfactory references. Applicants must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
