Detail information about job Research Fellow in Battery Materials Modelling. Terms and conditions vacancy

A 36 month postdoc position is available at the University of Surrey under a multidisciplinary project funded by EPSRC, within the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE). The post is part of a collaborative project between University of Surrey and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

The aim of the project is to develop and investigate low cost nanoporous functional carbon materials and their composites to be used as negative electrodes in Na-ion batteries.

The successful candidate will perform Density Functional Theory and Molecular Dynamics simulations of model nano-porous carbons and their composites, to identify the preferred Na sites and relate materials atomic features to the ion storage capacity and the diffusion rate. The simulations will be guided by the experimental work, in particular the structural characterisation, and so a close working relationship will be needed with postdoctoral researchers at the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) and in the School of Physics and Astronomy (SPA) at QMUL. The postdoc will be supervised by Dr Qiong Cai at University of Surrey and work closely with Prof Martin Dove, Dr Alan Drew and Prof Magda Titirici at QMUL.

The success of the project requires multidisciplinary collaborations therefore good communication skills are essential. We are looking for candidates with a PhD (or equivalent) in chemistry, materials science/engineering, chemical engineering, physics or a closely related discipline. The candidate must be independent and motivated with the willingness to travel and collaborate with experimentalists during the project. He/she should have a strong research/technical background in atomic scale materials modelling, particularly experience in DFT and (or) MD simulations, proven by peer reviewed publications in the field.

This fellowship will last 36 months and should preferentially start on 1stOctober, 2017.

Should you wish to have an informal discussion regarding the role, please contact Dr Qiong Cai ([email protected])

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) per annum (full-time) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the verified original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604) per annum (full time).
